How can I get people to follow my blog?

I'm just wondering how many of you successful bloggers out their got to where you are. Did you simply follow many blogs, comment, etc? Any advice or ideas? Thanks :)

Just wondering because I'm new to all this!

  2. I think there are different levels of participation among "followers." I know that there are TONS of people that read my blog that never comment. Ever. Don't despair!

There are people out there that take social networking very seriously -- they are on Facebook, Twitter, blog several times per day, etc. I look at blogging as something I do primarily for myself -- to write about the fun I have in my kitchen, and to "meet" other people who love food as much as I do! I do try to leave lots of comments for people when I read their posts, and I always try to check out commenters' blogs.

I've been blogging since 2005, will approach my 1000th post this coming year, (early in the year, probably,) and still only get a handfull of comments (usually less than five) per post.

This might be kind of "sassy" of me, but in the end, I think it's kind of a "popularity contest."

I've been enjoying what you're writing, and added you to my list of blogs I read regularly!

  3. I'm trying to figure it out myself! I think part of it is making sure to comment on the blogs that you follow and when people comment on yours, you follow up. That's what I've been trying to do anyway. Also post your updates on twitter perhaps.

  4. Dani,

I went many months without comments when I started. I agree with Heather, when you comment on other peoples blogs they sometimes comment on yours (but not always). It also helps to comment on very popular blogs to get your blog noticed. Also when people comment I try to always respond. I think when people comment and you don't respond they feel like you never saw their comment, or cared about their comment, so why write another one.

Many of my local friends read my blog and never comment, they send me email instead. In the end I think the blog has to be something that you do because it makes you happy.

    I hope that helps,
    Alicia

  5. I agree, in general, with all of the above...also, you might want to look into adding a live activity feed widget (wow, that's a noun stack!) to your blog, so you can see how many people actually do visit passively...they're a lot more of them than you may think!

  6. Hi there Dani.
It was three months before I got a comment and a follower. I have noted a lot of the followers on other peoples blogs were 'already friends' of the blogger; or been coaxed to join for a 'give-away'. For me it was just about getting established and then passing traffic liking what they read. Whenever I get a new follower, I celebrate it on a personal level. Like some of the above, the most comments I would receive would be about 8, it's only in the last month that the number of my followers has increased and I am not quite sure what it is..maybe all those sweet cranberry recipes...For me it a huge compliment, not a popularity contest.
